A family-run rural haven in Devonshire

About Us

A shared passion for animals & agriculture

Our Family

The Harlings’ story began in 2019 when we decided to find a smallholding to create our dream life in the countryside – Will, an experienced arable and livestock farmer, Abbie, an experienced business and animal care provider, and our son Daniel, who has an incredible way with animals. Having spent a year exploring the entirety of Cornwall, we stumbled across the beautiful place that we now call home, located on the breath-taking Bere Peninsula in Devon, within the Tamar Valley National Landscape.

Over the following years, we undertook extensive sympathetic renovation in line with our natural surroundings and the farm’s heritage, transforming the existing working farm and introducing a secure private field for hire, canine care, and equine livery. We created accessible tracks through the 9 acres of our mature woodland and renovated the farm buildings, making them fully accessible to facilitate Educational & Therapeutic visits for individuals and organisations.

The farm breeds British Heritage Rare Breed Berkshire Pigs, Dorset Horn Sheep, English Goats, various waterfowl, Gloucester Cows, Shetland, and Welsh Ponies. Harlings is now an accredited Educational Facility for the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and Social Farms & Gardens, being awarded the ‘Green Care Quality Mark’ by Social Farms & Gardens to deliver effective Care Farming.

We continue to farm and add extra diversification by improving facilities, and we are aiming to open a Farm Shop & Café, Campsite, Cattery, and Indoor Equestrian Arena in 2024. The farm holds various events and open days and works closely with the local National Landscape to improve its environment, biodiversity and sustainability.

We are proud to say, we have been rather busy:

  • 2022 Became a Nodal farm for the Tamar Valley National Landscape
  • 2023 Devon’s first ever Rare Breeds Survival Trust Educational Farm Park
  • 2023 Accredited with the Green Care Quality Mark from Social Farms and Gardens

  • 2020-2023 Piloted our own 3-year project on a mostly voluntary basis providing Green Care and Skills training to local individuals, schools and organisations which has shaped the way of our future having found massive need and benefits our students and individuals have gained
  • 2024 Start building Daniels Ride Community Interest Company, operating from Harling Farm providing bespoke social prescribing and individual opportunity for well-being and therapeutic visits
